I am using proftpd and I would like to know if there is a way to speed up access to the ftp server. It's on a nice fast connection, but it hangs for like 10-20 seconds after connection, then it completes the login process.

Thanks for any help! Rninja

Proftpd by default will perform a reverse DNS lookup on any IP address connecting.

Add

UseReverseDNS off
IdentLookups off

to your proftp.conf file. That will get rid of the pause on login.

yeah, if you put your server behind a router or firewall it will pause like that.
