When starting up a routine Disk clean up operation cleanmgr.exe starts and then freezes during the analysis phase with the status line quoting " compressing files". If I cancel the operation and then run Taskmanager I find the cleanmgr still running and keeping the CPU running flat-out.
Everything else appears OK. Any ideas anyone?

You might find some sort of fix here. There seems to be some sort of problem with Disk Cleanup, compressed folders and larger drives.

The recommended fix goes like this -

1. Type Regedit in Start - Run
2. Navigate to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersi
on\Explorer\Volume Caches
3. Open "Compress Old Files" folder
4. Delete all files in this folder
5. Reboot
6. Run Disk Cleanup

Spot on Linney.
You pointed me to a rich seam of info. on this problem.
Thanks.
