Hello,

I am trying to fix a computer for a family member and I had to replace the power supply and motherboard. After I got everything hooked up I tried to plug in the front panel buttons and LEDs to the motherboard connector. The original connector was completly different so I pulled the wires and pins fron the housing and connected them individually to the board. However, I found that if I plug the power supply the computer will boot up without any of the connectors in place. Is this normal? Shouldn't the power switch and reset reset switch be connected before the computer can start? The computer works fine but when shutting down I have to pull the power cable to get it to shut off.

Thank you for any advice concerning this matter!

If no wires are connected and it still starts (ATX power supply) then something is wrong. Make sure there are no jumpers on the mobo where they shuold not be. Check everything carefully and make sure the mobo is not shorted to the case.

the power switch and reset switch are just that.. a remote off/on switch. the computer will still turn on when it gets power (may be a setting in bios to turn on when it sees power).

if you don't have the switches connected to the right pins (find a layout from the motherboard manufacturer's site) then of course the buttons wont work :)

You need all the pin on the motherboard to be set up to the right pin on the wire on the LED connection. Look in the motherboards guide to see which pin goes into the right connector. You might have them backward. Another thing if you have the pin right then it could be that the LED bulb is no good anymore.

Franklin97355,

You are correct about it starting without any of the wires attached. The motherboard documentatioin doesn't mention anything else about jumpers besides the clear CMOS jumper. Would this really happen if the motherboard was shorted to the case? I looking at the system right now and it is running without a singel wire attached to the PWR
SW, RST SW, HDD LED, or MSG LED. Is this something that will most likely destroy the board if not corrected soon?

Thank you for any advice concerning this matter!

Shouldn't destroy the board but it's not good. Check the bios settings to see what is set. there is a setting on some mobos about what happens when power is interrupted. This might be your problem.

jcfrasco,
I agree with franklin. The power loss setting in the bios is probably set to restart instead of suspend or remain off.

Thank you for your help! I'll give it a shot and see what I can find in the BIOS.

This is a test to see if I am getting e-mails when someone replies to my threads. Thank You!
