At my work I use a Powerbook (OSX10.3) and an external display.

When I travel (and work) I often take just the Powerbook.

If my InDesign document is partially or wholly displayed on the external display when I close InDesign and shut down, then travel with only my Powerbook I have a problem: when I open that document it is either just partially in view or totally off the screen.

As I cannot access the title bar and cannot therefore click and drag it into view, or even move a partially visible window into full view.

If the window is visible (but not its title bar) how do I move the window down fully on to my powerbook screen?

If the window totally off screen, (having been entirely viewable on the external screen which I don't have with me when I travel) how do I make it appear on my powerbook screen?

just an idea but would F13 (Exposé) help with this problem?

Kind Regards
Duncan

Dunc:

Thanks for the idea. My keyboard doesn't have an F13 key. However. the other Exposé functions(F9 and F10) I have tried, "show all windows" and "show active window" respectively, allow me to see the window that is out of sight, but I can't do anything with it. I can't grab and drag it, for example. Am I exposing some useful ignorance that you can help me with here?

I certainly don't think you are showing any ignorance! What happens when you can see all the windows with Exposé - when I move my mouse around the windows highlight when the cursor is over them - and i can click any window to activate it

Duncan:

Yes, you are right. The window gets activated again, but unfortunately still on the phantom screen.

However, the solution for the InDesign window was just shown to me by a colleague at a conference. It is not an OSX solution, but an InDesign one. Under InDesign's window menu is this intriguing word "cascade". I clicked it and the window miraculously fell out of the ether on to my laptop screen.

Thanks for your interest and suggestions, though. (I notice, by the way you are from Oxford. I was at the U there back in the early 70s. In Wisconsin now.)

Best, Gareth
