I am using Outlook 2000, as an individual only, not connected to a network. I therefore have an Accounts option under the Tools menu, but no Services option.

With that in mind, here's my question. I have several accounts set up, and I want to be able to send from one account or from another, depending on the task at hand. Is there a way to do that without having to go back into Tools/Accounts and changing the default account every time?

The main problem with the status quo is that I can't tell which account is the default unless I go in and check it every time, or remember what the last one was, or some such scenario. In other words, whenever I compose a message, the actual message won't tell me who it's being sent from, nor is there a From field like in the networking version where one can set the Send On Behalf Of address, at least.

Is there a way to set the Account or the From field directly while composing the message? Or is there otherwise a way to know what the default account is as I'm composing a message, without having to go into Tools/Options every time that I'm not sure?

Any help would be very much appreciated.

I think you can set the From field by choosing an entry from your CONTACTS list.
Then the e-mail will appear to be from the person you select in your contacts list

We are using MS Exchange and when you select compose a new message go to the view menu, there is an option to view "from". This gives you another button like the "To" button.

I hope this helps,

Chris

I'm sorry, but neither of your posts helps.

You can't pretend to be someone else. Therefore, you can't set the From field, if you had access to it, to anyone from your Contacts list. You can only use those whose mailboxes you have permissions to access. And even then, when you send email from a different account than your own, it will appear to others to be from you but "on behalf of" the person who's in the From field.

However, the From field is only (readily) available for people using Exchange. My question here is how to use the From field when NOT using Exchange, but rather when setting up various Internet Mail accounts in Outlook.

Does anyone know if the From field is write-accessible in stand-alone Outlook? Without using any programming in the equation? I may have to use programming, but I was wondering if I could get around it.

The From field is useable by anyone using Outlook all you need to do is type in the address or alias you want to appear, While this will change the displayed name to the recipient the return-path\Reply-to will still be showing your default e-mail address. If you want to change the address for replies, While in the message click View|options and check the box marked 'Have replies sent to:' and type in an address.
Before anyone jumps up and down about 'address spoofing', all these changes will not hide the originating e-mail address, it will still be in the headers as the senders address.

If you add your own accounts to an address book you can use the pick buttons to set these fields.

Chris.

You are talking about the network setup, not the individual setup of Outlook. However, I have found the answer on my own to my original question.

For posterity, here it is: When composing a message, just go to [red]File/Send Using/<Name of Account>[/red] on the message form to send a message using one account or another. Not doing this will send the message from your default account, which is set under Tools/Accounts in the main Outlook window.
