Port numbers unfortunately are independent of name resolution so regardless what you call it, you still apply the port number.
If you want to call your site you can create a CNAME entry in DNS which serves as an alias to an existing hostname.

Hope this helps.

If I may hop in on this discussion I have a question regarding this. Is it possible to have the cname record point to an IIS directory?

Bill,

First off, whatever you set as the default web site for a machine will be what shows up when you just type
What exactly are you trying to do? It sounds to me like you are trying to host multiple web sites on a box. What you will want to use is something called a host header. That will allow you to assign multiple names to a single server and have each name go to a specific web site while all use the same IP address.

I hope you find this post helpful.

Regards,

Mark
