Fresh install of Vista - BSOD

Yesterday I went forward with a fresh install of vista business edition on my Acer Aspire 5100.

I boot from the CD and wiped my hard drive for the fresh install and everything went smooth. Now my computer began running fine but every once in awhile I will get a blue screen of death and upon reboot my computer will beep twice due to some sort of failure.

I am wondering if this failure is due to faulty drivers since I just installed a fresh copy of vista and haven't searched yet for all the correct drivers.

Please let me know if anyone can help me or if anyone needs any more information.

I will post exactly what the errors say the next time it happens on my computer, I will also post any system specifics you might need to help me!

Thanks!

Tres

You should always post the specific errors when there are ones, instead of posting a generic request for help.

There are no more PDC's! There are DC's with FSMO roles!

Yeah I should have waited to post once I got home from work!
I was just wondering if the Blue screen can be from not having all the drivers installed. Butttt the errors will prob shed some light!

I will post the errors as soon as I get home. Thanks Dave

The errors will lead us down the right path. ;-)

Try running the Memory Diagnostic program to check your RAM.

Beeps codes are the audio beeps that the mainboard will output when your system has problems. Generally they are used to identify booting problems.

Power On Self Test Beep Codes for AMI and Phoenix BIOS

Finish installing the correct Vista Drivers.

Check the Event Viewer for other contributing errors or warnings.

To update-

All day yesterday the laptop was running fine with 0 issues. Today when I boot it up I had no response from either the keyboard or the touchpad. Everything seems to be working fine on the computer but I can log into it without being able to type my password let alone press enter!

Also, I have tried connecting an external usb and mouse to no avail!

Upon a short google search I found many with a similar issue. Many stating the motherboard might need to be replaced.

Any reason why a motherboard might just go out like that? Is it a common occurrence, is it an expensive fix? More importantly, are there people out there who would buy a computer if the motherboard is no good?

Thanks tippers.

Tres

if the laptop is still within warranty then have ACER replace the mainboard...

it would not hurt to check with ACER to begin with...

as to the question if some one would buy a damaged laptop/mainboard... most likely, I've even heard that there are people buying housing plots in the everglades, but don't expect any large amounts of moola...

Thanks Ben,

I called Acer and at 2$/min to speak with customer service I don't think so. (I am almost a year out of warranty)

For all -

I think Acer makes a decent product - aside from my newly developed issue! But the fact Acer only gives you one year of service before charging 60$ for a half on hour of over the phone tech service makes me think twice before ever purchasing an Acer product again. I asked their rep why wouldn't the average consumer just purchase a Dell or HP or any mainstream brand that you can at least call and get tech support for the life of the product. Her response "I understand"... So much for Acer in the future for me!

To update my issue.
I read from another afflicted Acer user to hold ctrl and esc when powering up the machine. This goes to a black screen, then hard reboot. This worked for them and worked for me when trying to get our keyboards to work.

Does anyone know what this ctrl esc boot does and why it would allow the keyboard and touchpad to function again? Should I just sell my Acer (with a warning) now that its working?

Thanks TTers

Also, does this appear to be something faulty with the motherboard? I am concerned if my computer is about to go up soon I'd like to prepare myself. It appears the motherboard costs more then the computer may be worth!

Thanks!

I can understand your animosity over that rip-off service type deal, in Germany we at least have a 2 year warranty on any sold product, if it is new...

I can only conjecture as to what the CTRL+ESC would do, as I do not have an ACER nor have I ever worked on one... the conjecture would be that it CLEARS the CMOS (BIOS reset)...

Thanks Linney, I have come across that posting as well!

As you can see it is a common problem.
I think the best case for me is to just sell this sucker before it breaks again!

Of course I will note the recent problems I have and let someone else enjoy it who either wants to replace the MB, part it out, or take their chances with it.

For $450 to replace a MB I'd much rather buy a new laptop!

I guess the ctrl esc question was more of a secondary theme to this post. My main concern was whether or not this exhibits a motherboard issue.

Did you have these problems in XP, perhaps you should put XP back on before considering selling the machine?

Before you consider the motherboard as a cause I guess you must eliminate Vista and general Vista compatibility problems as the cause.
