I have two computers using windows 98 OS that hangs frequently.
The first one hangs less than 10 minutes or less after the OS is loaded. It gives a 'DPMS OFF MODE' and hangs. The 'ctrl-alt-del' and the power buttons don't work so I have to switch the power off from the mains.
The second machine hangs several times during the day and I have to reset using the power or reset buttons on the computer.
Please advice on what steps to take.

Have you run an antivirus program to make sure they arent infected?
That would be my first step. The more I learn, the more I realize how much more there is to know!

Try disabling your power managment settings in the cmos setup.

I agree with mainegeek the problem on machine 1 is most likely to be Power management in BIOS.
With Machine 2 what are your system resouces running at?
