Freeware Editor???

Hi all,

Although I have been programming for some time now in
Delphi (Object Pascal), my school (I'm a student) wants
me to learn Java. Now I know know that Notepad can be used
but I want a proper editor to work with. Can you maybe
direct me to some sites where I can download such a prog?

is an IDE that is especially useful for seeing the relations between objects. That's the one I would recommend most.

you could try emacs, it comes in windows and linux versions ( the latter being far superior).

You could also try VIM, which is a vi clone (vi being the one unix editor shipped on all systems) It is a bit weird for the beginner, but if you get over the initial frustration you will never look back. Its available at

Forte or Jbuilder Personal are complete IDE programs for development. I use Forte, it is a bit slow, but is nice. There is also Jedit, which is open source. TextPad which is shareware. There is another program called SyncEdit (or something like that) which is freeware. Mike Wills

Try this, it's what we use for our Java2 course there is a freeware version and a proffesional version that has a 30 trial.

Just found another last night. It is the open source version of Forte, it is called NetBeans (

http://www.netbeans.org).

I haven't had a chance to install it yet, but it should be a bit less buggy than Forte.

Plus, I have found a "NetBean" or plug-in that allows you to use the mouse scroll button. This is found at

http://nbmousewheel.sourceforge.net/.
