I've used some variants of VNC but they all required that the user download and run a file, I was looking for something I can install on their workstations and then just pop in whenever I need to... like dameware.

thanks!

Have you tried Microsoft's own Remote Desktop?
Its free well with any version of Windows Xp and above. You just need to set the appropriate permissions on the target PC's or use a local Administrator and you're set.

The only down side to this is you'll knock out whoever is logged in to the PC at the time you decide to connect.

Ignorance is not necessarily Bliss, case in point:
Unknown has caused an Unknown Error on Unknown and must be shutdown to prevent damage to Unknown.

Dameware's mini remote control is based on the Windows Remote Desktop Protocol. To that end, an equivalent 'free' (not really free, but already included) tool would be Windows Remote Assistance. It can be configured to provide unsolicited assistance.

if you guys are talking about RDP, I know how to use that but it's not what I'm looking for.

RDP knocks the user out and does not provide a seamless solution.

dameware allows the user to see what I am doing which is useful in many situations (ie, when a user asks you "HOW DO I PRINT OMG I CANNOT PRINT" you can easily show them without walking all the way to their department and desk).

vnc typically requires the user to run an exe file which is not desirable.

googled LANDesk, it's not free. if that's what you are replying to.

What he means is VNC has to be installed on the client machine before an admin can remote into the system. That's why I installed VNC on all my client machines as they were deployed. Now I've begun to use my Dameware utility, which is nice since if I forget to deploy the VNC, I can still remote in.

You're probably not going to find a free alternative that works as well as the Dameware. There's a reason...because there is value added to the RDP that makes it do what it does, and people expect to be compensated when they add value to a product.

I'm Certifiable, not cert-ified.
It just means my answers are from experience, not a book.

There are no more PDC's! There are DC's with FSMO roles!

IS there still a "remote connection" chat type box that appears with the Unsolicited RA connection?

Dameware still needs to push a client agent out if it isn't already installed. And you can do the same thing for VNC, by using something like PushVNC

Logmein the free version will allow you to remote control. Simple and works a treat, I have installed on about 9 PC's. Just needs plug in from IE and is easy to install.
