Free VFP test at BrainBench.com 40 questions in 1 hours. A certificate will be sent to you and posted online if you pass with a 2.75 or higher/4.00 (great for a resume)

I think the test is fine for employment testing, especially if the candidate takes the test if front of you. The 'Master' level of 4.0 is ill advised on their part. It actually lessens what credibility the test has. I think I was 2 answers away from 4.0. I am no where near a 'Master' level. If I remember corectly it was largely syntax oriented, no client/server, visual source safe, OLE automation, tier design & that stuff. I feel as long as you know what is and what is not covered on the test and would like to know a person's knowledge on what it covers it's useful for testing. And it's immediately available 24/7 and free :)
Now to take and pass the MCP VFP test :)

John Durbin

PS. I took many other 'Practice' tests, short 5 question quizes on topics I am acquainted with but not knowledgeable. JavaScript, Visual Basic, & others. I didn't pass a single one of them. I believe the site states 60% of all testers fail in realtion to all tests combined. I do not know what the statistics on the specific VFP test is as far as pass/fail ratio.

Here's my VFP results:
<A HREF=" TARGET="_new">

I provided the outline and about 90% of the material, so I am to blame. But before you go casting stones, let me explain:

At the time I presented the proposal to BrainBench (then Tekmetrics), the MS VFP tests were not yet available. As someone who has had to interview dozens of VFP candidates for job openings, I and my colleagues grew tired of trying to ask just the right questions in an interview to determine technical ability. What we needed was a reasonably short test that could be taken on a moment's notice (which you cannot do with an MS test) and which cost very little or nothing to take (again, the MS tests are $100 a pop).

I created a 50 question test and put it online, and it was a good start, but it lacked some niceties (about 150 people took this test over the course of a year). I had taken some of BrainBench's exams, and generally thought they were useful as a general indicator of knowledge, and proposed the VFP exam. I did this on a voluntary basis, which in hindsight was a bit of a miscalculation of the time needed on my part.

BrainBench has some pretty stringent QA rules, so most of my original 50 questions had to be reworked, and about a quarter of them were unusable. There had to be a minimum of 125 questions, and every topic area in the original outline had to have at least 3 questions of varying difficulty. Its not easy thinking of an "expert" question for form controls, believe me.

All this to say that, given the design parameters used by BrainBench (each question gets the same number of seconds, so no long scenarios; test is taken online, so limit the questions that can easily be looked up within 2 minutes; focus specifically on the skills being tested (VFP), not on ancilliary skills (VSS, for example)), and the intent for creating a test used primarily for candidate screeing, I think it comes as close to meeting the goal of a screening tool as is possible under the circumstances.

I'm certain that BrainBench will entertain revisions to the test, so long as it stays within their technical framework. If you have suggestions, let me or BrainBench know.

legal disclaimer: I do not work for BrainBench, and currently have no authority to speak for them or control over the test or its presentation.
Robert Bradley

<a href= - Visual FoxPro Development
I think it meets it's goal then. I thought some people on UT also comtributed to the test while it was in beta. Is this right or was it just your input? I think what I stated above says about the same as you did though I was looking at it more in what I see now as an unfair comparison with the MCP VFP Desktop exam. They are 2 different tests with 2 different goals. You &/or Brainbench did a good job in a screening test that is for sure. I do still think however the 'Master' level is stretching it. I'm glad to see the test! Will one aimed at a distributed orientation covering c/s, vss, com, mts, msmqs & other type topics be made do you know?
Thanks Robert, good work

John Durbin

<a href= Certified Professional VFP Programmer
ICQ VFP ActiveList #73897253

I took the MS VFP Desktop exam in beta, so I can't make a valid assessment of it in full production. There were lots of questions on interacting with other MS tools: 5 questions on VSS troubleshooting, and a few on Word automation that required you to know the specific Word methods to invoke to accomplish a particular task. I passed it with a decent, but not wide, margin; but I didn't altogether think that failing it meant you didn't know much VFP, but rather that you did not have substantial experience in all things VFP and Visual Studio related.

Before the test was released to beta, BB had several other VFP professionals review the questions (at least three people, IIRC), and they suggested changes (mostly wording, but also a couple of "bug" fixes) that were implemented prior to beta. During the BB public beta, the beta test takers could comment on each individual question as well as the test as a whole. I think there were 170+ takers of the beta.

BB strives hard to eliminate "it depends" and murkey scenarios and question/answers. For example, I was prohibited from asking a question like "what is the best choice", because best is subjective, and can mean different things (speed, reliability, functionality). IOW, BB wanted to ensure that there was always, always one and only one right answer - period. On the MS exams, though, you frequently see this sort of "best" question. The MS test is a different sort of animal, and I assume it meets the goals that MS wants it to, such as requiring you to be "well rounded" before attaining certification.
Robert Bradley

<a href= - Visual FoxPro Development
I am interested in taking the test you are all talking about. How do I go about doing it?
My email: bobby123@tampabay.rr.com

Contratulations Logamoorthy. In case you don't know, if you want to hide any test results you can do so. Check out your 'setup' or whatever there and you can choose to keep texts private or make them public. Just a tip if you care.
John Durbin

<a href= Certified Professional VFP Programmer
ICQ VFP ActiveList #73897253

Maybe I am on drugs of some sort but......I signed up with BrainBench.com and went to free sample tests. There is no test for VFP or Visual or Blind or any kind of FoxPro. Am I a retard or what?
