I'm running Windows ME and have decided to get a firewall after spending numerous hours restoring my homepage and deleting files. I have a Compaq Pressario, 1 gig processor, and 26 gb's of freespace on my drive. I would appreciate it if someone could recommend a free firewall thats worked well for them. Thanks for your responses

I use Zonealarm and Keiro firewalls. Both are free and good. Need some configuring but my parents have got them also. (And if they can do it so can anyone)

I have also heard good reports of Keiro, someone told me it was more flexible in a SOHO LAN environment than Zonealarm.

Thanks for your responses, I'll give them both a try.

You may also want to try Sygate Personal Firewall. Pretty cool! I'm running v 5.5 build 2525 and have never had any problems with it.

Kerio personal firewall is free for personal/charity use, but not business/commercial use.
Sygate personal firewall is free for personal/home use:

ZoneAlarm is free for individual and not for profit use, but again not commercial.

Tiny Personal Firewall is also free for personal use, but requires a license for commercial environments. I can't find an official homepage for this product, but googling for the product name will locate several download sites. The company homepage is

thanks jrbarnett;
I said that, cause I recently made the rounds to the usual sites and none were really clear about cost, licensing, updating cost if you go with trial...etc, etc.

case in point; (not complaining mind you, just clarifying)

-- Kerio;
FREE for home use
After installation, Kerio Personal Firewall will function as a full version for 30 days, after which it will lose some of its functionality and become the FREE version.
-->not really free, in my book

-- Tiny Personal;
I had trouble finding a d/l link

-- ZA
been hearing some probs with latest version, so wanted to check out others, and heard Kerio gives more options, nicer GUI, etc....
but very Free still..I'll agree

-- Sygate seems free with Registration...Easy enough

p.s This page may be better for sygate cause the other makes you click this link (downlaod-buy)....i guess it's just marketing

Thanks a bunch!
wanted some opinions

Of course, the release version of WinXP service pack 2 is supposed to be here next month, which will have a good firewall straight out of the box and locked down security settings. Anybody using this OS should really check out MS's efforts in this area when the release version comes out.

If you examine the features lost by examining the comparison table, you will find most features lost can be covered by IE6, Google toolbar etc.
