"Classes just ended and that usually frees up her time"
a preposition or an adverb? Merriam-Webster classifies up as a noun, adjective, verb, adverb or preposition depending on its use.
One of the phrases that's always bugged me is "woke up". I choose to say awakened or awoke just because I feel using "up" in that context is awkward. Thoughts?
In that context, 'free up', and similar constructs such as 'wake up', 'pick up', 'look up', 'get over', etc. are called phrasal verbs. Usually, the semantic meaning of the phrasal verb is unique, separate from either of its components, and therefore, is treated as single semantic unit.
