Frame Relay vs. VPN 3

If anyone has any information on Frame Relay vs. Virtual Private Networks with the Internet as a backbone please feel free to enlighten me. Possibly the strenghts and weaknesses of each. thanks sully

Even though VPN is the wave of the future at this point you should only be considering this medium of you meet the following criteria.

Data not critical. Just try getting an SLA out of your ISP. The only thing they will give you is link uptime. If you need packet prioritization, forget about it. Also Video is definately out. VPN is great for remote office access and telecommuting. I just installed a redundant Nortel VPN service for telecommuting. It works great. Just make sure that you have management access to the system for creating,deleting users and adding groups and filters.

IP VPN are ready for prime time, running video over IP VPN is non issue. Find a Network Based VPN provider where you dont need to buy VPN box for remote offices and provider
can do packet prioritization etc

Keep in mind if you are using vpn you are still at the mercy of the internet. If UUNET has problems, you have problems. It is completely uncontrollable and unpredictable.
Especially if you are using mission critical apps.

If you are using a VPN across a private network, you might as well get a frame line. Unless you are crossing lattas and it is too expensive.

What is the application for the use? Is this an regional network for a business or just conencting some remote offices?

Not all VPN's are public to the internet...
Many Telcos have a private MPLS network where the internet has no bearing.
