Hi,

In the last couple of hours my computer automatically updated (from Microsoft:
1.Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool
2.VIA Tecnologies Inc. Networking
3.Microsoft GDI+ Detection Tool

since then none of my FPW26 applications appear to work nor does FPW26 at the command box level. Task Manager shows the following processes as having no PID, no CPU Time and no memory usage:

foxprow.exe
wowexec.exe

If I restart the computer the relevant FPW app start-up screen (or the command box level screen) appears briefly as part of the shutdown process with a window saying that task manager is shutting down the program (with the 'End Now' option).

I note that 'HELP!!!' in the subject line is not regarded as descriptive but here in the text it signifies desperation.

Peter,
Since I have done #1 + #3 on my machine, and FPW is still working fine, I'd question #2.

Rick

Hi Peter,

I have now lots of clients with the same problem. My application seems to start but closes immediatly after. They all are using XP, but not every client with XP has the same problem. Did you find out what happened with your system?

Thaks for any help!

First, my apologies to rgbean. I either overlooked or did not get a notification of that post. In reply to that post, #2 was the one that Microsoft homed in on as well. It is fashionable to rubbish Microsoft but on this occasion, despite the fact that it was on a Windows 2000 machine, they spent long hours trying to sort it out because it seemed to have arisen from their automatic update (now switched off!!) and eventually it seemed to be fixed by re-installing the original network card driver - but the problem still comes back.

One thing that I did not discover until after I had posted the original item was that, when the computer is in the problem mode, it will also not open Excel attachments in an e-mail. I can save the attachment to disk and then open it normally though!

So, to answer marcfree, despite the fact that he is talking about XP rather than 2000, what do I do when the computer plays up again? I found this 'fix' by accident when I was running an FPW26 application rather than just trying to open FPW26 itself. As usual with this problem, I get the hourglass for a little while and then nothing. At this point, I tell the computer to restart. It chunters about a bit and then comes up with the FoxPro error message 'Cannot quit FoxPro' Clicking on 'OK' then takes me back to the menu of the FPW application, I exit via the menu option and then normality is restored (the restart instruction does not continue) - until the next time - perhaps a few weeks later! How wonderful technology is.

Hello,

I work in an office where we have about 30 computers running a 2.6 exe application.

Two new computers with XP were just installed and now the app won't load. Along with other posts in this thread, it starts to load - flashes on the screen, then goes back to the desktop.

Has anyone figured out the cause of this and have any idea of what I can do to remedy the situation??

TIA,
Janis

I have just twigged what it is about the (now) two Windows 2000 machines that have this problem that differentiates them from other (mainly XP) machines that do not. One of my clients has a 2K machine that has also never had a problem. I have the FP26 applications on at least 6 XP machines at various sites none of which have had problems so far.

The second 2K machine is on my home network and runs FP26 windows and DOS with no problems except if I start the machine with my organiser connected (using Microsoft Activesync). The 2K machine that had the original problem also runs Activesync.

Also, have you tried running the applications in Win98 compatibility mode on the XP machines?

Peter

Peter,

Thanks - what do I do to run the XP machine in Win98 compatibility mode? Also, if it works in that mode, what does that tell me?

Thanks.

Janis

Janis

You don't run the XP machine in Win98 compatibility mode - just the application. On the properties for the shortcut to the application you can select the compatibility tag and then choose the OS that you wish to use. If it works in that mode I am not exactly sure what that tells you. Perhaps somebody else with more knowledge than me can help!

Peter

Hi Peter -

I tried the compatibility test and didn't have any luck.

I also looked at the Windows components that were installed - compared them to XP machines where the program runs correctly but didn't see any differences.

Someone must have solved this problem....

Thanks for your help.

Janis

Hi, JanisB

I'm looking for a solution for this problem for months but it seems to be a mistery that nobody knows about. I started suspecting about SP2 for Win xp. One of my clients boot the machine using the Win CD (sp1) and after that with a normal boot(sp2) my application started to work again(????). It worth a try?!?!?! Please let me know if you have success.

I have an issue with my XP box that if I have a MS DOS command prompt open, then my FPW26 will hang while loading. If I close the Command window it will continue. Never have figured out why. Also happens with a few other apps than just FPW.

I downloaded Windows Defender from the Microsoft website, ran it on the problem computer. It found 10 suspicious files and deleted them.

The Foxpro app that wouldn't load before now loads correctly.

Good luck to you all who have been struggling with this - I hope this solves the problem for you, too.

Janis

Hi Dave,

"Suspicious" items as identified and removed by Web Defender: QuickLinks, Adware-Webnexus, Deal Helper, Find the Website You Need, Target Saver, Adware-Qoologic, Dollar Revenue, Small i36, Start-up.Name(?), Downloader ATD. I scribbled down these names since I didn't do a print screen so they might not be exactly right.

NasibKalsi - the program is being compiled on an XP OS.

I am re-visiting this thread because I believe that the problem for me anyway is caused by an HP printer process HPOEVM07.EXE. I have continued to have the intermittant problem on both XP and Win2k computers where FPW26 and other mainly 16-bit applications suddenly refuse to start. I did notice that, during the attempted shutdown 'fix' that I was using, 'hpoevm07.exe is not responding' came up quite frequently. Now, instead of the shutdown fix, I simply go into task manager and kill off the hpoevm07.exe process. As soon as I do this the non-starting FPW26 application suddenly appears.

The bad news is that, although HP have provided a fix for the related hpoevm08.exe, I cannot find that they have provided one for hpoevm07.exe.
