Hi all,
I have couple of very old fox apps (fox2.6) that wouldn't run on Windows7 64-bit computer. I know that I can install virtual compatibility mode, but first of it doesn't work for me 100% and installation process is too involved(i need a simple solution so i can instruct a client what to do). Is there any other way to fix this problem without installing compatibility mode?

Thanks in advance

Are you perhaps confusing compatibility mode with a virtual machine?

In general, you don't need to install anything to run in compatibility mode: you just go the Properties window (for the EXE, or whatever) and select the appropriate option.

By contrast, if you want to use a virtual machine, you do need to install it. But, from what you have said, it's unlikely you'll need to do that.

Yes, in fact I did confuse those two.
I did mean virtual machine to create windows xp environment inside Win7 to run older programs. But I am looking for a simpler solution. As far as compatibility mode -- I don't know how to apply this as it's running from a .bat file and doesn't have .exe to start. Also, all options on compatibility tab are disabled and message says that's because shortcut points to a network drive, so I have to go and use compatibility troubleshooter and there it tells me that I have to point to an .exe, but I don't have one.

First there is forum182 for this, but I don't mind you posting here.
I can't contribute much. As far as I know the fp2.6 runtime is mainly a foxw2600.esl file, but your application should also be an EXE. You can and should compile to an exe to be able to make it run in xp mode, there is no other way to make use of this.

Bye, Olaf.

Foxpro 2.6 can run on Windows 7 64 bit with Dosbox. You can download dosbox from dosbox.com

I agree that Dosbox would run a Foxpro for DOS application. But what if Peter's application is Foxpro for Windows? Would he have to install something like Windows 3.1 in order to run it under Dosbox? Remember, he wants a solution that can easily be installed by his customer.

Hi all,
I have solved my problem. Installed Virtual Pc and Windows XP Mode.
Inside of XP Mode had to do remapping and couple of tweaks in system32 config files ... and Yeah, it's running!
Have tried DosBox as well but could not use it as i don't have exe, i am running a BAT file...

However, I still have a problem to solve. When I run my prog it loads in a small window and when I am trying to maximize it --> error message "The video device failed to initialize for fullscreen mode".
Have tried couple of solutions found on the net, but still no luck.

Any suggestions?

Would you mind terribly if I ask you if you have the source code for this application in FPD2.6, colleague Peter?
If you do, and you also have the VFP (any of the 3.b, 6.0, 7.0 or 9.0 version) installed - why wouldn't you try to move the code to the project in VFP and compile an EXE? ;-) This is what I would do in this situation.

HTH.

Regards,

Ilya

I second Ilya, also if you compiled to an exe, running in XP compatibility mode DOES NOT mean to run within a virtual xp machine, in the properties of an EXE you can get by compilation you have a checkbox for running in xp compatibility mode, and this still means running in the win7 environment, not in a xp virtual machine. This will have advantages and may help with the fullscreen mode perhaps.

Bye, Olaf.
