Hi guys!!!

Its always nice to see partners that share the old loving to such a wonderful tool. Fox, what a great problem solver for me.

I have a personal project upcoming, and I want to buy a Foxpro DOS 2.x version distribution package, the point is that I don't have an idea of where to buy it, and also if it can be send to Mexico.

As I told you this must be a Fox version that let me generate fully distributable code, so I be able to sell my final product to customers.

Any idea? Thanks in advance guys and hope to hear from you soon!

Sincerely,

So far as I know all compiled programs developed with any FoxPro or Visual FoxPro program language is fully distributable. (Some have said that Microsoft does not want FP or VFP end-user programs used on a computer without Windows, but the consensus is that's your clients' responsibility.)

Although you may be able to buy old FoxPro for DOS/Windows packages (up through versions 2.6a) for about half the cost of the latest version of Visual FoxPro, keep in mind that this is a program language that does not enjoy all the improvements and added capabilities developed in the past 10 years. Also the newer operating systems such as Windows 2000 and XP have moved away from the old DOS environment and compatibility issues between DOS and WIndows can arise. (Imagine buying a cheap 10 year old horse because you want to enter it into a race where the other horses are only 2 or 3 years old. While you have to consider the cost of software as an important factor, it is not the only factor. Of couse only you can determine what is best for you.)

If your programs become successful and in the future you want to create upgrades for your users in a newer version, you probably would have to do a major rewrite on the code.

Also, FoxPro is fading away even though it is a great language, while its successor Visual FoxPro is very well supported (see forum184).

If your funds allow, try to program in at least version 6 of Visual FoxPro and apply the latest service pack. It is a good solid version and is virtually 99% compatible with versions 7 and 8. Some popular auction sites have good prices, but if you use them then verify that the sellers are reputable and read the descriptions closely to verify it is not an upgrade version, has not been registered, is legal, and has all the software included.

Also, beware of Microsoft's cheaper Academic versions. While they are full versions, if you later try to upgrade to a newer version, you will have to buy the Full version, since the Academic version is not recognized by later Upgrade packages.

Thanks guys!

I am using at this time Visual Fox version 6.0 and I must agree with you, it's a wonderful version and gives a lot of improvements, but my project, is this:

Buy old computers that use DOS and install a system with Foxpro 2.x in order to offer a solid product, a great platform and a not expensive product.

I know it may sound silly, but this is something that I belive can result, also my future clients, will not have enough money to buy a new and impoved computer and also, will not be able to buy an expensive product.

Trust me, I am aware of my possibilities, but also know that its a good chance, I'll give it a try, and hope old versions of Fox will not be too expensive.

Thanks a lot, God bless and wish me luck!
