When I searched for rundll32.exe files, I found one in c:\windows\system32 directory, another in c:\i36 directory and the third in c:\programfiles\musicmatch directory, fourth in c:\windows\servicepacks\i386 directory.

Norton did not identify any of these as a virus.

I searched for these since I am getting often a message that "windows cannot access file or path or drive..you dont have permisssion" message. One of the posts on the internet said that restoring rundll32.exe can solve the problem.

Questions are: If one of these is a potential virus, which one can it be and will deleting it simply solve the problem?

How do I restore rundll32.exe?

and any other ideas about solving my problem of crashes with the above message?

Thanks

Arun

The only one that would be a virus if it was one is the musicmatch one.

servicepacks is a backup, i386 is the original i believe, and system32 is the most recent current one installed when the service pack was updated. If its not showing you should try registering it.

Go to the Run at the start menu, type

regsvr32 c:\windows\system32\rundll32.exe

Is this the Rundll32.exe file you have?

Size = 32.5 KB (33,280 bytes)
Version = 5.1.2600.2180 (xpsp_sp2_rtm.040803-2158)

That is the latest SP2 version current on my system.

When you get this particular error message what are you trying to do (load a program?). Is it always the same action or type of action causing the error?

Thanks for your reply.

This message does not come up by itself - When I am connected to the internet, I suddenly notice nothingis happenning, then if I click anywhere (any menu item on startup menu), or try to open any program, I get the message.

Another problem (not this message, but my computer just hangs)is I have not been able to communicate remotely with my office computer (using remote dsktop).After I connect in about a minute, the computer hangs.

I must tell you that when I am not on the internet or remote desktop, I have not noticed this problem. I diabled all UPS drives, connected the Ethernet directly to my cable modem instead of the router, erased the rundll in musicmatch, e-loaded my vdeio driver from dell's site, did surface scan of my disc, nothing worked.But for the past two or three days I noticed my disk making a whirring sound when i try to acess the disk (say sarch for a file using start-seaach.

Hope you will be bale to help - mainly with respect to the VPN connection.I posted the eventlog messages in another post, the One I think it logs is :

"The description for Event ID ( 35 ) in Source ( ISSVC ) cannot be found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. You may be able to use the /AUXSOURCE= flag to retrieve this description; see Help and Support for details. The following information is part of the event: ISService."

Problem seems to have been resolved. Had to uninstall Norton as today strangely, Norton stopped working and I was hit with a SpywareStrike Virus (or malware.. whatever). Cleaned out with SmitRem.exe utility, but reinstall (or even uninstall) of Norton2005 did not work..had to download Norton 2006, get utilities from Norton to uninstall older version and reinstalled 2006..now everything is working fine..no more crashes.
