I added a new printer to my computer and it works fine. Every time I reboot, however, I get the found new hardware balloon and a dialog box trying to find the install disk for the printer.

How do I stop this behavior?

Sorry, bcastner, but the three step fix did not work!

I am genuinly sorry it did not work.

From the posts I have have read (and some user reviews on C-Net and Zdnet) there are issues with both the USB configuration, and the lpt1 print processor.

In your configuration are you trying USB? If so is the port certified USB 1.1 compliant, with the newest USB drivers from MS? It will not complete installation without both conditions being true for USB.
If parallel, the suggestion was that it would not work with other parallel devices defined, due to some interaction with the intalled print processors.

Thanks for all your help, all y'all.

I am using LPT1.

From the chatter on the net, it appears that I am not the only one with the problem.

It is a known problem with XP but Microsoft refuses to correct it.

Hey Judge
Since you read all the stuff about it, is it a prob with parallel port printers and win xp or win xp and printers, both usb and parallel?

thanks

I don't believe it makes any difference with USB or parallel port nor does it have anything to do with the brand of printer.

The problem is Windows XP but Microsoft will not acknowledge it much less fix it.

I have trolled through and the Google groups and everything I have read there confirms what I just said.

go to grc.com and download unplug and play, and run it, to shut off plug and play.or you can do it in, control panel/administrative tools/services.

tpetre7415.

Do you mean "Universal Plug and Play Device Host" rather than "Plug and Play"?

Your suggestion could possibly work but it is rather drastic; I like plug and play and it has worked fine with everything I have connected so far.

From the chatter on the net, I believe that this is a problem with older printers even if you have updated the driver.

I wonder if anyone has been successful in installing an HP 1120 printer in win xp?
I bet I will have to keep my other machine running 98se as i use that printer for "larger than 8.4 x 14" paper.
I know there are newer printers that will do that but they are up there in cost and my HP is still chugging away, prints as good as the day i got it for win 95!

From the Newsgroups, 11-2-2002:

"Hi, gang.

After I upgraded to WindowsXP, I noticed that my HP 1120C printer had lost a lot of its functionality. The drivers that are supplied with the XP CD are seriously lacking, because they aren't made by HP. I even lost the ability
to print on sizes larger than letter (the printer can print up to 13x19).

Woe is me, eh? Well, LOTS of people complained to HP that they didn't even have XP drivers for wide-format printers that are currently in the stores.
So finally, they have published an XP driver for the 1220C... a newer version of my printer. And that driver is actually working perfectly with my older printer.

So the gist of my message is that if you have a 1220 or 1120 printer, download that new driver from HP and get back to work! :)

In the Group Policy Editor, START->RUN: gpedit.msc, there is a policy to turn off balloon tips. Not sure if it will shut off hardware balloons however.

bcastner, i just have to get the web addy for those drivers as i just came from HP site and they arent there, best they have is win 2k drivers.
So can you email or post the web addy here, please!!!

thanks so much!

ok, i read it wrong, he is saying the driver for 1220 works for the 1120 as well.

I am also reading, after doing a google search, that the drivers for the 1120 are built into xp.
I dont know, havent tried yet.
I do know one thing, they have like 1120c 1120 cx 1120 cxi, 1120cs, etc, the drivers are all the same, same goes for the 1220, the c,cx,cxi, all the same.

I hope im not doing anything wrong posting here, just seemed that the thread was done anyway?
