We have a special user that needs to have an email address with our name (abc.com) forwarded to his email account (xyz.com). For example, Bob works for xyz so his email is btech@xyz.com. He does special projects for us and needs to have the email address btech@abc.com. I set up an AD account and created the appropriate btech@abc.com mailbox but he would like to have btech@abc.com mail forwarded to his btech@xyz.com inbox. How can I accomplish this? This user does not log on to our domain nor does he access his btech@abc.com mail through outlook web access.

In the OU that you keep your users in (in AD) right-click the folder and create a new Contact. Make the contact for the external account and assign the remote SMTP address to this contact. Now go into the AD user you created for the contractor and forward all mail to that mailbox to the Contact that you created. That's how you do this in Exchange, by creating an SMTP-addressed contact in AD.

Then go back into the Contact and hide it from the Global Address Book.

Now that I'm fully awake, the way I would do this is JUST a mail-enabled contact if he always will be reading his mail using his other account. No sense in using up a CAL just to forward. Kill the mailbox, assign the requested email to the Contact, unhide it, and let 'er rip.

So youre saying theres no need to create an AD account?

58Sniper is right. You don't need to create the AD account if the contractor will never use OWA/Outlook. You can add that mail-enabled contact to a distribution group, or not-hide it from the Address Book so that it will be used normally for in-house messaging.

He's still going to have to setup an account in AD for btech@abc.com (his domain) and then setup a mail enabled contact for btech@xyz.com to forward the mail to.

I'm Certifiable, not cert-ified.
It just means my answers are from experience, not a book.

Exactly. How can I forward mail from the btech@abc.com address if it doesnt exist?

Create the Contact in AD. Supply the users SMTP address : user@xyz.com

Then open the Contact after you have completed the wizard.

Click the Email Address tab, and add the user@abc.com

Click OK

The forward should work automagically.

I'd make the contractor address the primary, and the company the secondary.

there is one "gotcha" does bob need to send email to others from the company address? For instance, I have contractors who work with clients. Those contractors have to be able to send mail from company.com rather than contractor.com

This scenario won't work with the nice mail enabled contact...

Hi,

I tried your solution but I get an NDR with this error.

"A configuration error in the e-mail system caused the message to bounce between two servers or to be forwarded between two recipients. Contact your administrator."

Am I missing something?

It worked for me. How are you sending the mail?
