Hi All,
I am running AIX and I am trying to get all mail forwarded to an SMTP server on Windows.
I have added the SMTP server's ip address as the relay host:

# "Smart" relay host (may be null)
# Relay host to forward outgoing mail not in the local domain to.
# To forward ALL mail to this relay host, uncomment the appropriate
# rule in ruleset 0, as indicated by the ruleset's comments.
#DSmailer:relayhostname
DSsmtp:198.212.71.77

But, when I try sending an email to an external email address from AIX, I get 501 5.5.4 "Invalid Address".

Okay,
Now I am getting this.

550 5.1.2 me@somewhere.com... Host unknown (Name server: 198.212.71.77)

I am no expert with Sendmail but recently came across a similar issue. Have you tried using a hostname instead of the ip address for the smart host. Certain builds of Sendmail seem to do DNS lookups for the MX records of whichever domain name you use as the hostname and it cannot do this for an ip address. You also need to make sure that sendmail is allowed to query any DNS server which hosts the records for this domain name.

Hope this helps

Tru tru
Make sure you have an MX record in your DNS and that DNS is working properley.
