Forum experts please help!!! - EXPLORER caused an invalid page fault 1

Dear experts, I would really appreciate your assistance and expertise if you help me with a problem which is driving me crazy!!!!!!!

I keep experiencing this problem when I try to right-click on my hard drive or floppy drive icons in MY COMPUTER or on their shortcut icons on my DESKTOP, as a result it is a real pain trying to use any of the right click functions such as checking properties, drive/disk space or using my format function. I have copied the page fault reported and provide it below -

I am running Win98SE and IE5.5 which I upgraded to IE6 yesterday to see if it would make a difference...it didn't. I have also downloaded "Tweak UI" and tried to repair my icons but that did not repair the fault or solve the problem. I cannot find any useful help on Microsoft's support pages. Can you offer any advice/solution, and I am not very computer literate so bear that in mind if you can help me.

Are you using Novel?

Check the version of shell32.dll I'm running Wn98SE with IE6:

4.72.3612.1700

To fix the icons, Use Windows Explorer to remove the ShellIconCache file from the Windows folder.

NOTE: You need to be able to view hidden files to see the ShellIconCache file. To view hidden files in Windows 98, click Folder Options on the View menu in Windows Explorer, click the View tab, click Show All Files, and then click OK.

Restart your computer

many thanks for your advice, I checked my version of shell32.dll (running Wn98SE with IE6) and it was the same as yours - 4.72.3612.1700

I found the hidden ShellIconCache file from the Windows folder and I moved it to my Recycle Bin. I then rebooted and tried right-clicking on my hard-drive icon in My Computer but I am still experiencing the same problem

Could the fact that I removed/moved the ShellIconCache file to my Recycle Bin rather than deleteing it completely be significant? I wasn't quite sure what you meant when you told me to "remove" the ShellIconCache file from my Windows folder? Do you have any further suggestions? I can still access right-click functions on individual files such as Word documents etc...I just cannot right-click on my hard/floppy/CD drive icons ?????

Recycle bin or delete, it didn't matter.

Do you have a C-Media graphics or sound card?
