Hi everyone,

I am new to this field and my question may be stupid. I see in text books [e.g. Fortran 95/2003 for Scientists and Engineers, Stephen J. Chapman, P. No. 23] on Fortran that the Fortran 95 character set consists of 86 symbols but when I count them from the table given in the books I find only 85 symbols.

No. of symbols Values
~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~
26 a-z
10 0-9
1 _
5 + - * / **
17 ( ) . = , ' $ : ! " % & ; < > ? blankspace
Can some one tell me if some symbol is missing from the above list?
In your list, ** is not a character.
It is made up of two asterisks.
I think that your arithmetic is incorrect,
unless you are counting upper-case letters also.
