Does anyone know why a running total based on groups won't show in the header unless the detail band is hidden or suppressed?

Formula not calculating unless details band is suppressed

Running Totals are executed as the report runs, so whatever results you get will be as the data is displayed.
The post doesn't make sense to me, try posting technical information:
Crystal version
Database/connectivity used

Crystal 10.0
db is SQL Server 2000 using OLE DB
The formula counted items by group and displayed the group totals in the report footer as a summary.
The formulas also would appear in the header when the detail was hidden/suppressed.
Sorry I don't have more infomation. I didn't save the report as it was a test.
