Formual works if typed, but not if copied 2

Excel 2003. I have a formula that simply subtracts 2 cells (=G8-E8). If I copy and paste that formula to the next cell below, it appears to work (=G9-E9). However, it copies the result from the cell above. If I manually type in the formula (=G9-E9), it works fine. I've tried to copy and Paste Special>Formulas, but no dice. I've tried Error Checking, and Excel finds no errors.

Check Tools>Calculation - make sure it isn't set to manual. If not, the cell is probably formatted as text. Change the format to general and then copy/paste
