FormMail.pl Won't Work - Help.

I'm doing work on a site using Unix that requires Matt's Script Archive's FormMail.pl script to send a contact form. Here's the form as I have editted it with information given by the host, i.e. the @referer info. I can't figure out what the deal is. The error we get is:

Internal Server Error
The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.
Please contact the server administrator, webmaster@housepro.net and inform them of the time the error occurred, and anything you might have done that may have caused the error.

More information about this error may be available in the server error log.

Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

# $mailprog defines the location of your sendmail program on your unix #

$mailprog = '/usr/sbin/sendmail -i -t';

@referers = 'doamin.net\',\'11.111.11.11\';

# @recipients defines the e-mail addresses or domain names that e-mail can #

[pc3]What am I missing?
I appreciate the help! [gorgeous] Ladyborg
"Many of life's failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up." [Thomas A. Edison]

Not sure but I think this line is wrong...

@referers = 'doamin.net\',\'11.111.11.11\';

it should probably be:

@referers = '\'doamin.net\',\'11.111.11.11\'';

This will load the values and their respective quotes into the array. Does the array have to have each value with quotes aroun it. If not, then this should work:

@referers = 'doamin.net, 11.111.11.11';

Hope this helps!

I assume the page should be .htm? Is that right? [gorgeous] Ladyborg

I changed the @referer line as bpinos recommended. Still get the error:

Internal Server Error
The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.
Please contact the server administrator, webmaster@domain.net and inform them of the time the error occurred, and anything you might have done that may have caused the error.

More information about this error may be available in the server error log.

Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

Okay two things:

First you can try running this script form the command line. Thats way we know it is not an apache config problem. To do this type:

perl FormMail.pl

It should return to the screen with standard HTML, like the source of a web page. If it does, then we are dealing with a problem in the apache configuration. If it does not, then there is a problem with the script.

To get some good diagnostics, try running:

perl -w FormMail.pl

This should give you some good diag messages. If you don't understand the output, post it on this forum and I will interpret it.

Do I type what you recommended above into my browser? When I did, I got msn search results. I know I did it wrong. [gorgeous] Ladyborg

No, you will need to type that on the command line from a shell account. Do you have a shell account on that system? ie, can you telnet or ssh into that system?

If not, you should be able to change the very first line in the formmail.pl from:

#!/usr/bin/perl

to:

#!/usr/bin/perl -w

That may give you some more output in the web browser. If you have access to your httpd logs, then you may want to retrieve the error from the error log.

I wonder if this discussion still goes on.

I had the same problem too in the beginning. However i was able to make it works by adding all the fields that I have in my form to %Config part. By doing that, I can get the redirect page shows up as the user press "Submit" button.

But, I am not sure about if what I am doing is a correct solution.

One of the problem that i have is that the script does not grab the values from the form. If I do not use redirect page, there will be no value from the form diplayed on the result page. Moreover, it does not send me an e-mail to the address that I defined as 'recipient' in my html page.

can anyone me the list of part of the script that I need to change in my FormMail.pl file (other than $mailprog, $referers, $recipients and add hidden input in my form since i did all that)?

does the script work for any kind of form?

do i need to add the fields i have in my form and put them in the script? if i do, where should i put them?

thank you

seth

I found this online and thought it would help, but it didn't. It does clearly outline what needs to be changed:

I will try your idea too. Let you know if it works. Thanks.

I'd like to reiterate J1mbo's post:

You might want to check out this website before deploying formmail.pl:

-jim

I do this for two very good reasons:

1) Matt's version is insecure, out of date and badly written
2) Matt's version is on the FBI's blacklisted software list, and any site found to be using it may find them selves blacklisted on antispam sites, with the potential of of having their site blocked by your hosting company.

Yes it IS that dangerous.

There are packages spammers use, that purposefully sniff round the web looking for sites that use Matt's version of FormMail. Then use them to spam thousands of innocent parties.

The NMS project took it upon themselves to rewrite all of Matts scripts, including FormMail, so that they are a secure, bug free and an example of good coding. There is a FREE support mailing list, which the developers actively respond to. Try get help from Matt for his FormMail. Even Matt himself now advertises using the NMS project scripts, as he freely admits he wrote his scripts when he was first learning programming and Perl.

PLEASE, please look into the NMS script. If only for the fact that I personally receive 75% spam a day from spammers (and bounces), some of which are from abused FormMail websites, with spoofed input.

Barbie,

Thanks, sounds great. I looked at the readme file and plan to use it. Can you give us a synopsis of just WHAT needs to be changed? Then those of us with NO TIME can start usinmg it asap.
