Formatting a tape using Unix 1

How do I format a previously used tape (8MM) in Unix. I want use it over,
What is the command syntax
 
you may wish to man mt check out erase and retension I tried to remain child-like, all I acheived was childish.
 
Yes , tried that to no avail.

My advice would be not to use mt erase - it takes forever! Have you a handy electromagnet nearby ;-)

Seriously, I must agree with Ed (this is getting to be a bit of a habit!).
