I have just bought a Freecom Generation II portable CD-RW which comes with Roxio Easy CD Creator 5 Basic and I can't seem to format CD-RW's, although it does CD-R fine! An "initalisation error: Illegal Request" appears when you go to format. It uses Direct CD to do the formatting through the Easy CD Creator & its running on Windows 98. Help!

Get rid of Easy CD Creator, its full of bugs. Nero is by far more stable. All things are possible except skiing through a revolving door.

Mulga, even though that's your opinion, the software should still work when it comes to a basic formatting job. Plus, most people are looking for solutions with what they have - they don't want to have to pay for another unless it's the last resort.

BELITD, What type of CD-RW disks are you using? Were they brand new or are you reusing one? Also, DirectCD and Easy CD Creator are two separate programs. Have you tried formatting in both?

Your right cdogg I dont really want to have to fork out for another program, although I know Easy CD has bugs I got it with the hardware & only need it for data CD's so it should be good enough. I am using Panasonic 650mb CD's which are being used straight out the wrapping but were bought years ago! The version of Easy CD I have (5) opens up the Direct CD when you go to format, there is no option of formatting with Easy CD.

Formatting for Direct CD can only be done in Direct CD. However, you should be able to "erase" the disc in Easy CD. When you open Easy CD, go to the CD menu and select "Erase Disc" from the dropdown. Here, go ahead and do a full erase. Then try to format the same disc under Direct CD.

Does the error message "initalization error: Illegal Request" come up right away, or does the CD spin first? It sounds like you might have to uninstall/reboot/reinstall the software.

You don't need to format a CD-RW unless you are doing drag-n-drop in Direct CD. You can write a data CD without worrying about formatting first in Easy CD. "A little knowledge is a dangerous thing....." [morning]

I have already tried re-installing all of the software & the writer, and applying all the service packs! It does spin then come up with the error i think. I have tried to "Create data CD" as well & it still doesn't work. I will try the erase disk but first I'm buying a pack of new CD's as we think its them. Cheers!
