I have a friends really old toshiba laptop that has 2 removable hard drives. Neither one would boot, so I took the 1st one and using fdisk, delete, recreated a new partition and then I formatted it (500 Kb Fujitsu) installed W95 and it works like a charm. However I can't seem to format the 2nd HDD (2.0 GB Toshiba), it won't format past 2%. I get a NOT READY...FORMAT TERMINATED error. I've tried fdisk /mbr, even tried PQ Magic, all without success. If anyone out there may have a solution, I would greatly appreciate it.

Try getting a low-level utility from the hard drive manufacturer and then using the software, test the hard drive, and then low-level format it. I had a problem before with dos format not being able to format my hard drive. so I low-leveled it and it worked fine. A low-level format re-creates the sectors, heads, and tracks on the disk.

It wipes out everything, so using format should work then. If it doesn't, then I suggest you have a bad disk and you will have to probally get a new one.

I couldn't seem to find a low level format utility for Toshiba, however I did find a sort of generic one. Although it didn't work, either this disk really is bad or the utility that I need to use has to be specifically for a toshiba hdd. At any rate I'm just going to tell my friend that I think the hard drive has bit the bullet, and it's time for a new one. I got her other one up and running, so her laptop is at least functional.

At any rate,
Thanks Beyondsociety!

You might want to try software from Gibson Research. Go to GRC.com and read up on hard drive antics and solutions. Steve works wonders for recalcitrant drives.

Normally you should get a low-level format utility that your hard drive manufactur supports. You can use a generic low-level format tool, but sometimes it wont work or if you screw up and your hard drive is under waranty most manufacturs won't replace the drive.
