Bad new ladies and gentlemen, weve got a format problem on our hands, please read the following for your mission objectives:

1. overview

In the process of doing a basic reformat of the hard drive by booting off of a 98 floppy, i encountered the following:

Checkin existing disk format.
Recording current bad clusters
compete
verifying 3,000.34 m
format complete
write protect error
format terminated

2: secondary actions

upon receiving the news i in turn ran a scandisk from the booted floppy: reports said that all errors were fixed, i then proceded to the command prompt to run a:\format c: /s
and i received the same errors form before,

3: conclusion

is this a bad hdd soldiers, or am i a dumbass, i will in turn try a erase program to write zeroes to the drive,

any ohter suggestions are allowed and appreciated

remember this is completely confidentional, thanks you

Hi,

Why are you doing this: format c: /s

What's the /s part for.

You could try to download a new bootdisk from then follow these incstructions: FAQ748-1599 on how to re-install Windows including formatting the hard drive.

Hope this helps! NATE

SPYDERIX, adding the suffix /S to the formatting command, will automatically load and install the basic system files, i.e. COMMAND.COM, IO.SYS and MSDOS.SYS once formatting has been completed. Hard disk is then bootable to a C:\> prompt.

Check that the parameters in CMOS are the correct ones for your hard drive. You could also try removing the existing partition, rebooting the PC, and then reinstall a fresh partition, and reformat.

I'd skip the suffix /s and just go for a straight format. see if that works. if it does, then you can boot from the floppy or CD anyway to get access to install the operating system.
