Hi
I have just fitted a new 2.1 gb hard drive to my laptop (Texas Extensa 650cd) running a 133mhz processor. I wish to install windows 98se onto the drive can someone please help as in my opinion it will need to be Fat16 as Fat32 will not compress. I tried to install win98 on the old drive but could not compress it, can someone please help with details on how to do it step by step.
Many many thanks
Barry

You will need a windows 98 boot floppy disk. It needs to have both format and fdisk on it.

Boot the machine with the floppy disk. Run fdisk.
When it prompts you for large disk support, choose Yes if you want FAT32 or no if you want FAT16, personally I would choose fat32. You won't be able to compress the drive but you will have less slack space. If you choose fat 16 you can compress the drive in windows using drvspace with compression agent, which will increase the space but decrease the speed.

After you have selected whether you want large disk support or not, you will need to create a primary partition and make it active.
After you exit fdisk, reboot with the disk and at the prompt type format c:
When it finishes, you can install Windows 98. If you have Windows 98 on cdrom, you should reboot again with the floppy in the drive and at the prompt select with cdrom support and than run the install from the cdrom.
