How can I reformat my drive with w2k OS. I have a laptop and going to sell it and wanted to reformat drive.

before, you can just reboot to dos and

format c: -- then install the OS again from the CD boot

how can I do that with W2k. I want to re-install W2k so all of the files that I have there gets deleted.

thanks

USe a boot floppy with Fdisk included..once you boot from the floppy, delete all your HD partitions..after that, make a new one..then format must be included in the floppy, use it to format the new partition. A+, MCP, CCNA

One solution is to boot to a Win98 boot disk in Command Prompt Safe Mode then format away.

However, if you boot to the Win2000 CD, you can re-partition the drive from the setup program. This will effectively wipe out the drive.

The first option wont work (if partition is NTFS), since windows 98 safe mode wont be able to recognize NTFS.
The second option will do it, and not only delete/create partitions, but format them also with to different formats(FAT and NTFS).Just be aware that windows will follow through the steps, and after formating will start copying the files, so at this point you will decide if you want this to happen or not (exit windows install).
So you have this two options first using the bootable floppy with fdisk included (to delete/create partitions) and format included (to format partitions with FAT). A+, MCP, CCNA

So. . . I can just create a boot disk from the W2k CD. . which requires 4 floppy disk. . . is this my best way to re format my hardrive ??

when i installed W2k, I thought it will wipe out my drive , which is what I wanted. But for some reason I can still see other files that I had there before. On re-start, I can see that i have a

Windows 2000 Professional. . . .
Windows . . . . . .

option

what does this mean??

I only want W2k and no dual boot.

thanks

when i sid boot floppy, i meant windows 98 boot floppy, just make sure, in this floppy you include fdisk and format.
And just follow the directions in the previos posts.
If you want only one OS, then delete all the partitions either using the CD or the floppy, then create a new one, and follow the installation process (you can do all this booting form the CD) A+, MCP, CCNA

I would just use the laptop's quick restore CD if you have one. Should put it back to factory installed software.

EBee,

If you've done a clean install (ie, booted from win2k install CD & removed & recreated partition to install into using 2k's partitioning tools) you will have what you want (you can check this by logging on and seeing what's on hard drive - should be none of your old data/apps). However, probably trying to be clever, win2k has a habit of picking up existing boot.ini file BEFORE you've removed the partition, saving it in memory & then adding another entry (so it looks like a dual boot). If this is what you have, just edit boot.ini in the root of C: (hidden, sytem, read-only file normally, so act accordingly to edit it) to remove one of those entries (they should both be the same, eg:- multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT="Windows 2000 Professional" /fastdetect).

If your old stuff is on, start again and remove partition with win2k partitioning tools during the process (you also can also use fdisk from win98 boot floppy as suggested - its got option to delete non-dos partitions).

thanks for all of your suggestions, here is what i end up doing and was able to accomplish the task.

With you guys help, but with my confusion, I created a boot disk from W2k ( 4 disk). this probably could have been avoided by just inserting the W2k CD. I followed the instruction up to the partition part. I deleted all partition and just end up having just one unallocated disk space. I tried deleting the unallocated at the beginning, but as I discovered, this is not possible. I needed to delete the c: volumne partion for a full disk format ( like format c:) I then continued to re-install the W2k OS from the CD.

task completed

thanks to all

Your are very welcome!!!
