Hello,

We have a word doc which has been created using form fields.

i would like to make the form field width to be stretched to my desired length by default.

I've managed to set the max input length, but the field is still only a tiny fraction of the desired width by default.

Is there a way to make form fields your desired width or is the default width non-changeable and will only expand as you type in the field?

Cheers,

Hi Dave,

The OP's query concerns fixed width, not length. Since characters in most fonts have variable widths (and the space is one of the narrower characters in proportional fonts), padding out the result to a fixed number of characters usually won't restore the field width to the required value.

you can make a default length by putting in spaces as the default, but this is not all that relevant as ANY input will - as I have previously stated - resize the formfield to its current content. The default length is simply....the current length, before any other input.

I don't understand how are you getting this to work?

I've tried it and ok the default text forces the field to the desired starting width, but if you click in the field and type it appends the text to the current content at point of entry and expands the field size even further.

Perhaps we should scrap using word and do an HTML version, though if ever we got MSO2007 the emails would then no longer work!

never rains does it!

Since you mentioned creating an HTML version; does anyone have any opinions on InfoPath? You can make some nice looking, sophisticated forms but it seem as though anyone who wants to use the form must have InfoPath installed as it appears there isn't any free runtime executable.

I beleive you are correct Dave, you need InfoPath installed to use the forms.

Which is a complete joke that MSO2007 can no longer handle HTML in emails.

This is one reason our company cannot afford to upgrade to MSO2007, it would break our systems.

If you are looking @ forms not running in a standard browser with X/HTML you might want to look at XForms, which is Adobe's forms server system, which works with the standard Acrobat Reader!
