form calculation

i'm trying to use mindpalette's form calculation and it wants cells named in my table. how the heck do you name a cell that just wants text?
i've got a cell with a drop down list. i'm trying to take that value, multiply it by a constant number and get a total that then gets submitted by email.
all the tutorials seem to have that "and then a miracle happens" formula to them.
