Forgotten login password

A colleague has an Apple Mac laptop which is useless because he has forgotten his login password. Apparently (unlike windows) you cannot just create another user.

Has anybody aqny ideas on how to turn this expensive paperweight back into a (slightly) useful tool? I know nothing about Apple Macs myself!

Boot from the System install CD. There is a help file on it and on the apple.com site.
