Hi all,

I need to create child domains but here's the problem: the forest and domain are the same. The forest is called corp.xyz.com.

I was wondering if there is an easier way to create a new forest called xyz.com and move the current forest without too much trouble. In the end, what I would like to do is have xyz.com as a forest and the following trees under it: corp.xyz.com, client1.xyz.com, client2.xyz.com, etc.

Please note, I am running Windows 2003 AD and all new servers will be running Windows 2008 ADS. Also, we have an install of Exchange 2007 server, another install of Certificate services running on an existing DC in our current setup which will have to be moved to the new organization.

All help is sincerely appreciated.

Thanks.

Sorry about the attachment. I thought I could upload an attachment to the post. Anybody know how I can remove the attachment box in my post?

Regards.

If the Forest level is Windows 2003 then I believe you can rename the Domain.

And documents are listed along the right side of the page. Please read everything before moving forward.

If you use rendom on a domain with Exchange it can cause issues. However, rendom can be used to rename the domain back again and Exchange works fine. I have tried this in a production environment (life is too short for test systems!).

In further reading and the fact that you have Exchange 2007, I would not recommend a domain rename. You should build a new domain and migrate to it.

otherwise it is recommended to remove Exchange organization and then rename; but I highly doubt that any one would actually want to do this.

Hello all,

Thanks for the tips. What I did is to create a new forest and create all the new domains as part of the new forest. Now, I have to spoon all our existing users/servers (including Exchange 2007 server) to the new domain under the new forest.

Any suggestions/advice/tips?

Thanks.

Create new Exchange servers and migrate your users. Cleaner environment.
