How can I force the Windows Update application to be reinstalled, or from where can I download it and reinstall it manually?

From the Windows Update Troubleshooter"

Problem Description:
Several problems on the Windows Update site can be caused by outdated or mismatched site
software. To install updated software for Windows Update on all operating systems other than Windows 95 or Windows NT 4.0, please follow the instructions below.

Resolutions:
For Windows 98 and Windows Millenium Edition:
download the controls from and
save them to your desktop. Extract the .cab file following the steps below:

1. Go to the desktop and right click the iuctl.cab file.
2. Click "Extract to."
3. Point to a known location (like the desktop) and click "OK."
4. Go to the location you selected and right click on the iuctl.inf file.
5. Click "Install."

For Windows 2000, Windows XP, or Windows Server 2003:
download our controls from and save them to your desktop. Extract the .cab file following the steps below:

1. Go to the desktop and right click the iuctl.cab file.
2. Click "Open".
3. Select all the files listed.
4. Right click on them and click "Extract."
5. Point to a known location (like the desktop) and click "OK."
6. Go to the location you selected and right click the iuctl.inf file.
5. Click "Install."

Good advice, but did you notice it suggested extracting the cab file to your desktop? That would put all the files out on your desktop. Not a good idea. Use the Temp directory, or some other folder.

I noticed they suggest downloading and extracting to a "known" location such as the Desktop. What harm do you see in that? It's four files.

If it's only four files that would be fine. But, I always use a specific folder for this kind of stuff. I ahe a c:\temp directory that I use. That way I know any thing in there can be deleted without a problem, and it keeps my other locations clean and neat.
