I don't use excel much but when I do, I forget that the location in the spreadsheet is saved (most apps open files on the first page, at the top of the page) and I often forget to scroll up or change to the first sheet and end up missing data.

Is there some way I can force excel to ALWAYS open EVERY spreadsheet on the first sheet, in the first cell?

Thank you.

Sorry, I should have mentioned that I'm using Excel 2003.

Not without code

or by making sure that when you save / close a workbook, you move to cell A1 in the 1st worksheet BEFORE you save

Thank you for your response. So, you mean that each file would need to be saved with the code for it to open at the "home" position?

Unfortunately, these are files I get from other people, usually saved in some location other than where I should be gathering my data from. So, it goes like this: "Here's a list of names in Excel, use these names in some other application." "What? Oh...not *those* names, the *other* names on the first sheet in cell so-and-so, *those* are the names I meant.

Sounds like a dilemma that you may not be able to fix. I assume some people will save the workbook on the sheet you should be looking at and some won't. No macro/code is going to be able to read your users mind and open the workbook to where is "should".

It used to be that you could modify the template that opens a new workbook but I can't seem to find where the template for a new workbook is in Excel 2003. My suggestion would be to code into the "This Workbook" section and an on open macro that would effectively select cell A1 on sheet 1. THis way when a new workbook is created from the template the code is already there and the files will open where you want it to.

sounds simple enough to me.......I realized I've not given any specifics and for that I apologize.

What a lot of potential work for a simple problem solver. You will need a yellow Post-it and a pencil. Write on the sticker, "Before starting work on an Excel spreadsheet, Press Ctrl - Home" and stick the sticker on your monitor. Actually you could use any colour Post-it!
