Was born Ivan in Ukraine, when I immigrated to the US I became John. Since Vanya and Vanka are nicknames for Ivan (similar to Rob and Bob for Robert in English) I use vanka for my handle. If it's not available I add 25 since it's my favorite number.

Gee... I'm not on the list.

gbaughma - Greg Baughman. Born in the Chicago area, I now live in Virginia, Minnesota, about an hour north of Duluth. I'm a computer geek and a musician. I enjoy woodworking, motorcycling, and camping. I have 3 kids, ages 21, 20, and 19, none of which live with me any longer. I went to school in Eastern Tennessee, moved back to Chicago in about 1985, and to Minnesota in 1994.

I chose my handle for a few different reasons. My given name is Gene (actually Eugene), and a friend from Jamaica used to call me "Geno Mon". I did consulting under "Gnomon Software " for a bit (a gnomon being the pointer on a sundial, as well as being phonetically similar to the nickname). And finally, "genomon" translates from Greek as "one in the know".
I enjoy camping, fishing, taking flying lessons, and playing guitar (mostly bass) in a local under-rated and under-talented Blues band.
Went to School at University of Wisconsin - Madison, and go back to the local Tech college from time to time to try & stay current with new programming tools. I am currently single, but have a 22-year-old son who finally graduated college last December (2007).

Just a note - I'm fairly busy right now, but I'll get these entries posted into the FAQ shortly.

Thanks.

My name is Andrew. I live in New York state working as a network administrator. My handle is not very creative, it's simply my work user ID :)

I've been having a good time reading all the the old threads. Some very informative and amusing stuff.

Thanks,
Andrew

I'm in Central Texas, a displaced Yankee in the home of Big Oil. Somewhere along the way I got a PhD in a field that is vaguely related to Mathematics, Statistics & Metrology. I have worked in petroleum exploration & refining since I stopped teaching Medical School.

My handle is an extremely complex substitution algorithm from my name. That complex substitution was replacing spaces with no-space. You try typing no-character. See? Spooky, isn't it?

I'm a writer, a filmaker ( a comic, and ocasionally, I write the odd program.

Someone else writes the even program.

The writing includes technical writing, as well as essays, reviwes, scripts, and other junk. Way fun.

Not as fun as flying weasels, but you gotta' draw the line somwhere.

Edward,

Have you copyrighted that substitution algorithm? If not, then don't be telling us the algorithm, else you lose all control to your proprietary work. <grin>

Yes - I haven't seen a flying weasel since a Pink Floyd Concert in the '70s. At least I thought it was a weasel.... [3eyes] [pipe]

Typically, when an editor tells me he doesn't want to see typos, I stab his eyes out.

It's kinda win-win.

I rarely use a spellchecker, so typos creep in. For professional work, I always use a spellchecker.

However, how's this for a revised bio:

Well, that's just the PUBLIC key. ;)

My Ego is unsoothed as I appear not.

Scott formerly of Glasgow and Paisley Scotland married to Liz, still an inhabitant of Lizland to the exclusion of all others!!!!

Now Bundaberg Queensland Australia.
Been in computing (as it used to be called) more years than I care to remember, although I still get a huge kick out of it.

Used to do Citrix and all that stuff, however am now an IT Manager (how the mighty fall) and head up an IT support company helping those who are unable to help themselves.

Rather than being the hired out "consultant" (at what I always thought were exorbitant rates), I can use my experience to benfit local businessand the local community.

Did I mention I like it here ?

[blue] A perspective from the other side!![/blue]

Cheers
Scott

Despite lurking around in this forum for a while I have never introduced myself. So:

My name is Paul but I use the handle addy as this was my nickname in school for many years and has kind of stuck to this day.

I'm 33 and I am from East Yorkshire. Live and work in Hull as an Information Manager in a compnay which specialises in providing support to Oil & Gas companies.

I'm married, have two boys aged 3 and 2 and another child on the way (must get round to buying a TV).

Well, I contacted CajunCenturion about myself, but since he is so busy I will share what I offered him for inclusion in the FAQ.

The wahnula was the name someone in my band gave to our beloved default vehicle, a 1979 (or thereabouts) Robin's Egg Blue Volkswagen Squareback that held at least (4) members and whatever gear we could stuff into it. I have no idea who coined the name, and the spelling is all mine. I use it as a handle because it's always available, it's my eBay username as well.

It's also a substitute for profanity, like "up the wahnula" or "what the wahnula is that???.

I think it's a corruption of "Kahuna", but we'll never know.

As for me personally, I received my degree in Landscape Architecture in 1981, while working my way through school playing clubs. Learned Fortran as part of the program, but I waited 16 years to apply my degree. Playing music was just too much fun, and an argument can be made as to my arrested development.

I played, wrote and recorded rock music with a band, and toured Europe as a solo piano-bar guy. When my 3-month tour was canceled in October 1997 I visited my sister here in the Houston area and ran into my dream job, as a Landscape Architect for a small family-run company. Rock & Roll is a young man's business, and I was at the point where I was ready for a career change.

People in mid-life crisis usually go the other way, quitting their day job to join a band. I love my "new" job and get to fiddle with PCs as I built every machine on our network including the server and a laptop. There's always something to do, new hardware/software to install, and crises to resolve, so it's the best of both worlds: I get to exercise my creative side and keep my pockets full, and play SysAdmin between projects.

I'll request an addendum to my current one :)
I was born in 1982, spent 15 years in France and so far the rest have been spent in the US. I study martial arts (isshinryu karate), enjoy technology and dislike people who won't think for themselves.
I enjoy the game of go, and I think you would too.. So ask me about it :)

Tony, I got your information and it's already entered. Unfortunately, there seems to be a display limit and it's currently off in the middle of Volk359's entry. So in addition to what is missing from Volk359, the entries for WalksOnBeach, wahnula, wuneye, WZUP, xaf294, xlbo, XwBrendanXw, Zathras, Zen37, ZoomerZ, and zutfen are not being displayed.

All of the information is being shown in Edit FAQ and Preview FAQ mode, but apparently, not in normal display mode. Let me see what I can do about that.
