Greetings-

I just passed the CCNA exam, and now wondering if I should go for my MCSE, or would there be, i dont know, more $$$$ in getting my CCNP. I know I want to be a LAN administrator, or field service tech of sorts. I KNOW I would be happy doing dedicated field service on Cisco routers, L-3 or 2 switches, if such a job even exists. However, I am sure I would also enjoy working on server configurations and so fourth.

advice, please

Those are two different career paths. You should decide based on what you enjoy doing, not on how much money they pay. You'll never be great at something you don't love doing. If you aren't great at it... you won't be paid great for doing it either.

You can make a lot of money at either, but only if you are truly good at what you do.

Yeah, it is a career path thing, although it is possible to do both, its usually best to concentrate on one field.

Depends on what you prefer to do, I think an MCSE should always see get a job somewhere ( although the pay rates may not be gob smacking) networking ( and the CCNP route ) can be a lot more involved, and may take you longer to get into but will offer better money long term.

As a side I wouldn't be concentrating overally on your paper qualifications, they're handy but real experience is what counts

Thanks for the input. I chose to peruse what I most enjoy- internetworking. I recently received my CCNP + CCDP. Just to clarify- it never really was “a monetary thing”. I wasn’t sure if jobs like the one I currently I currently have actually exist. I know that I searched EVERY State University of NY & not a single school was offered ANYTHING that was Internetworking specific. . ..so I kind of assumed that the jobs were scarce or that people ‘fell into’ those positions after ‘graduating’ from LAN administration. Pleased to say that I’m quite happy w/my knowledge & the fact that I’m a presale & postsale engineer for internetworking systems' products. I just might peruse the MCSE now so I can gain a better understanding of workgroup protocols & the LAN admin.
