Does anyone know where, in the registry, the option to open each folder in the same window is?
I can't set this option through the interface.
The OS is WinXP Pro SP2
TIA - jamie

From Windows Explorer:

Tools > Folder Options > General > Open all folders in the same window

(or something like that, my Windows is not in English)

Cheers,

Dian

Dian-
Thanks for the reply but I have done that (interface). It doesn't stick. That is why I was looking for a registry edit to acomplish the same thing.

It works for me.

Did you hit Apply instead of Accept?

Cheers,

Dian

Thanks for trying, Dian, but I know all that. I am really looking for the registry setting that controls how a folder opens, and the value that makes it open in the same window.
Anyone else have any ideas?

I will never understand why that obession with changing the registry manually. Windows should have never existed, as I see people feel happier playing with bytes.

OK, take a look at you Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\CabinetState key. On the fifth byte, try replacing 1a with 3a or viceversa.

Btw, a registry backup would be a good idea.

Cheers,

Dian

OK... Here is what I have for the CabinetState key in both HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\CabinetState and HK_USERS\<userID>\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\CabinetState
The data in Settings, for both keys is: 0c 00 02 00 0b 01 f8 75 60 00 00 00
What am I missing?

As a bit of extra information, "Thanks for the reply but I have done that (interface). It doesn't stick.", one reason that this may not stick is if you use Safe Mode in between Normal Mode sessions. Returning from Safe Mode always seems to make folders open in the same window in Normal Mode, until change it manually again.

The fact of the matter is that the setting (with the above exception) should stick, it is an unusual fault rarely seen in this forum.

See Line 30, left column for the saving settings issue.

Is there any Group Policy set preventing you from saving your settings?

Run the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy.

Are you running Tweakui or similar?
