Hi all,

I have small domain on a windows 2003 server, 1 default domain policy, within this policy is the desktop and my documents redirections, which have been set to Target: ‘basic –redirect every one’s folder to the same location’
‘Target folder redirection: create a folder for each user under the root path’
‘Root path’ \\Server\userdata\

Settings: ‘Grant the user exclusive rights to desktop’
‘Move the contents of the desktop to the new location’

Policy Removal: ‘leave the policy in the new location when policy is removed’

I have set up users without roaming profiles as they use the same workstations everyday. Their home directory is configured and mapped through active directory and their network drives are mapped through batch files for simplicity at the moment, (will be configured through GPO in the future)

The problem I’m having is that I tried creating a new local profile for a user as there’s has been corrupted.
After doing this their desktop no longer redirects?

The only redirection that works is ‘My documents’

I have created 2 new users in same GPO OU and they work fine? Regarding redirection of both desktop and my docs.

I have tried various fixes, renaming local profiles, test users etc…

Redirection is still working on exsisting users.

Any help given would be much appreciated.

James

Did you backup and then delete the local profile and the relevant folder under \\server\userdata ?
A new profile and folder should then be created at next logon and you can manually copy the relevant data from the backups to the new profile and folder.

Hi Paul,

That work beautifully, thank you!

I just renamed the folders in question for testing.

I have another question for you, why is it that if a user logged on to another PC they would still have redirection on there My docs, but not on desktop?

Occasionally users will login to a different PC, and it will be inconvenient that their desktop will not be redirect?

Thank you for your response before.

James

I think maybe it was the folder on the server \\server\userdata that had the problem.

Desktop should redirect whatever PC user logs onto.

>Desktop should redirect whatever PC user logs onto>

That's the understanding I have too.

I have just renamed the user in question local profile (Richard_old) and logged in to create a new local profile, the same as logging on to another PC with regards to creating a new profile and again it redirects my docs but not desktop,
The desktop folder seems to have all the right permissions.

If I rename and use the original profile, the desktop redirection works again?

Any light on this would be much appreciated.

Thank again James.

Did you rename the desktop folder at the same time you renamed the local profile ?

No I didn't because I thought it would redirect to the same desktop folder on the server, as if you were logging onto another PC it would create a new local profile and as you said it should just redirect to the same desktop again, the same as my docs. My docs still redirects.

Thanks,
J

Sorry when I say rename I mean e.g Richard to richard_old the same difference as deleting, just for testing purposes. Hope this makes sense.

Makes it easier rather then deleting every time.
