I am working on setting up folder redirection thru the Group Policy Editor. After making any changes in the folder redirection options, I will get the following error:
"Unable to save the redirection information to the configuration file. The following error occurred:
The process cannot access the file becuase it is being used by another process."

I don't know what would be using what file, its the first time I've tried to set this up.

Thanks,
Dan

markdmac,
When this error first started, I thought maybe it was just a glitch and rebooted the server. It was working fine as a temporary fix. The temporary fix does not resolve the issue any more. 2 servers could be an issue if I had more then 2 servers located on the network. I did however at one time have 2 servers; perhaps attempted replication might still be taking place. I should have mentioned this on the first post, but of course I did not think it was relevant. I followed Microsoft’s advice for KB 216498 - Remove data in active directory after unsuccessful domain controller demotion. I had some weird errors in the event log about replication, the 2nd server was still listed. The error still exists whenever I try to update GPO, but only for file replications.

A failed DCPROMO is hugely important.

Take a look at my FAQ faq96-4733. Make sure you run the script at the end of it to ensure that all instances of the defunct server are removed from AD.

I hope you find this post helpful.

Mark,
I appreciate all your assistance in this matter. Unfortunately, I think something else must be seriously wrong. I’ve noticed that even before I started fooling around with folder redirection, the gpupdate seemed to be slow. After performing the step by step guide you provided. I am still unable to do the GPO Folder Redirection changes. After I performed all the steps that you provided and rebooted, it seemed to work fine. After a couple of logon attempts, it has started doing the exact same thing again.

I don’t want to tie up any more of yours or any one else’s valuable time, I am going to skip folder redirection. When it comes to Windows Server, I am only a self taught amateur and it appears I am way over my head. I am not a student, but I think its time to become one.

Thanks Again,
Dan

Dan, check the event logs for any indications of problems.

Run DCDIAG and NETDIAG to help ascertain any problems from the DC perspective. Ont he clients, make sure you flush DNS and re-register with DNS.

From a client run:

IPCONFIG /FLSUHDNS
IPCONFIG /REGISTERDNS

I hope you find this post helpful.

Mark,
Everything else went ok with DCDiag and netdiag. Except for this error right here?

Starting test: frsevent

Mark,
Thanks for your efforts, I finally had the time to work thru the soluctions provided. I have no errors in my event logs accept for Event ID 3019 which microsoft "This error message is only informational. You can safely ignore it.".

The only problem that continues to happen is when doing a gpupdate /force.
Error that happens:
User Policy Refresh has not completed in the expected time. Exiting...
User Policy Refresh has completed.
Computer Policy Refresh has not completed in the expected time. Exiting...
Computer Policy Refresh has completed.

Any further ideas?
Thanks,
Dan

Those gpupdate errors are usually cause by DNS problems. Verify your DNS configuration.

DNS Settings:

Configure the server NIC to only list itself or other DCs, no ISP DNS gets configured on the NIC TCP/IP properties.

In DHCP, set the DNS scope option to only provide the IP of your local DNS server

For any statically configured IPs, make sure the DNS only lists local DNS servers and not ISP DNS.

In the DNS snap-in on the forwarders tab enter your ISP DNS.

I hope you find this post helpful.
