Hi,

Can someone please help with an issue I am experiencing with re-directing the 'my documents' folder to a folder on the user's home directory on the server.
I have not setup any group policies to manage this and have just changed the path to 'my documents' using the properties on the folder.

Problems occur when moving or deleting files, After I have moved a number of files. Logging off and back on, the files have returned back to thier previous destinations!

Also when I log onto a another workstation, it's takes a while whilst the my documents folder is copied to the PC. I think this may have something to do with roaming profiles that have been introduced.

Any assistance/insight into these problems would be most welcome.

Thanks

Naz

Its worth doing in using GPO - even ifs it just for one machine.

1. Make sure the user is the Owner & has Full Control to the directory
2. In GP their is an option to not sync certain folders in the roaming profiles - don't sync My Documents.

User Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> System -> Logon/logoff -> Enable Exclude directories in roaming profiles and then add My Documents

Thanks for your email.

I have looked at the security settings setting for 'my documents' the owner was set to the domain administrator. I have made myself the owner and also assigned full control priveliges.

I have looked at GP, and there are no settings anywhere that have been assigned for syncing offline files or folder redirection. both on the AD>GP editor and local PC settings (XP SP1 gpedit.msc)

What I have found is that a complete copy of 'my documents' exists locally on the PC in 'documents and settings' etc.. It is the files in this location that are synced with the 'my documents' in my home directory on the server.
I really don't need to store any data locally. Is there any way I can store all my data to my home directory?

many thanks

Naz

If you dont want to muck about with GP, then things should be fairly straight forward.

Under the Users account details on the server, make sure that the Home Folder (under the profile tab) connects a drive letter to a path.

For instance Drive Letter M: points to \\servername\userssharedfoldername (eg \\server\jsmith)

Then when the user logs on, they should get an M: drive. If they dont, setup a logon script for them with the line:

net use m: /home /yes

as an example.

Then point the My Documents by changing it's properties to M:
ASHPP is right though. Use GPO. It's far simpler.
