Folder problem in XP

I recently attempted to change the icon of a folder via 'Folder Options/File Types' (to no avail) and then found out that I could not open the folders in the same window anymore - each folder opens in a separate window cluttering up the taskbar and being annoying. I checked the options and the 'Open each folder in the same window' option is enabled.

Will I need to add a new entry into the file types settings and use DDA (I'm not sure what that is, but there is a small checkbox to enable it in the file type window)?

Please help because I can't stand having thousands of windows open :p

Try your luck with System Restore to get back in time.

Try Safe Mode, interestingly, just the fact that you enter Safe Mode may be enough to revert the folder behavior when you return to Normal Mode.

Thanks for the post Linney. I'll probably not win any prizes for saying this, but I don't have system restore - I turned it off some time ago (can't remember why) and I only just remembered I'd turned it off when I encountered the problem I mentioned!

I will attempt to use Safe Mode tomorrow and see if that helps.

Thanks,

Try this. It worked for me a while back.

1. Go tools ->folder options
2. Click "reset all folders" and then click OK. Click yes to the warning message.
3. OK your way out. DO NOT use the X.
4. Reboot your computer.

NOTES:

1. The default is for the folders NOT to launch in separate windows.

2. If you've customized your folder views you may want to make a note of the settings before you reset them.

Cheers.

I have tried booting into Safe Mode and that has not fixed it. I tried going through 'Tools -> Folder Options' but even though it keeps reverting back to the option 'Show each folder in the same window' it doesn't... If I change the setting to 'Show each folder in its own window' then close and reopen folder options, it has changed back to the other option even if I press Apply.

AArgh! Too many folders in the taskbar. Hehe

Have a look at this thread779-1212772

Try running ChkDsk to check your drive for errors. Right-click your Drive icon/ Properties/ Tools/ Error Checking. Select both boxes.

Run the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy.

If they don't work you could try repairing windows by running it over itself. You will lose all your windows updates but your files will be untouched.
