Folder Permissions

My goal is set my data folder to create any new files or folders which are moved or created within a permissions setting of 775.

Ive been looking into umask and sticky bits, but as yet cannot see anything that would help me reach my goal...

Can anyone help.. ?

Another idea... what type of filesystem are the files being placed on? If it supports ACLs, you can set default file creation masks for a specific directory using them (see the man pages for getfacl and setfacl).

im running rhel 5, it seems strange that it is so un`well documented to do such a fairly simple thing...

Annihilannic suggested using

scp -p

     -p      Preserves modification times, access times, and modes from the
             original file.

Does that not work?

i havent tried as many of the files i am copying across is from windows.
