Greetings,

I have the following problem: some users on a single-server Active-Directory domain use an old program called Window Works. This is one of the earlier Windows "suites". Word processing, database, spreadsheet etc. I don't recall who put out the program. The problem is that I want some users to only be able to view the data base. Problem is, unless I give them explicit 'write' permission, the app gives an error saying it couldn't open the database. This is not the first time I've noticed this problems on an NT network. I've seen it with other applications in different environments. To me, it appears to be a MS bug. Am I doing something wrong?

You cannot. Older program such as you describe required full access in order for you to even view the data. This is of course because of the file permition limitation. With the new generation of NTFS, everything changed.

I am sure you could find a readme file on that directory for a phone number. Call them and find out about their permistion options.

Even today, some very powerfull databases are required full access.

But then again, there are ways to get around such problem as well.

hope this helps.
