Okay this is a weird one and maybe this isn't the right forum but here goes. A lady was in the library here last night with a floppy that had her resume on it in Word format. She had just worked on it a couple of hours earlier at home and her office and came to the library to print it. However when she tried to access the floppy (on 4 different pcs here) she got the message that the disk wasn't even formatted. She swore the disk was fine. She went home and was able to access the file and work on it and save it and came back to try and print it and the same thing happened. Can anyone think of a reason why she could access the floppy at home, the office and Kinko's but not on our pcs here?

Thanks.

Floppies drives are created pretty much the same. What happens is that over time they go out of calibration, just like any other mechanical device. As the drive calibration is less critical than a hard drives, they tended to use cheaper parts, so they go out of calibration quicker. You may find that BOTH of your drives are out, so even formatting on your's may not work on another. The only way to fix this is to change both floppy drives for brand new ones.

Of course, could email it.

...and...

I tried it on my pc which is completely wide open and couldn't access it...

So I guess that all five FDs are in need of replacement.

The drives all work fine with our floppies and other people's floppies. It was just this patron's floppy that she had formatted at home that didn't work.

sounds like the patron's pc has the floppy disk drive problem not the library's Floppy disk drive.

Not a problem - just aligned or calibrated differently. She has no problem using her drive at home and any disks that she formats at home she also able to use at her work and Kinkos just not here. I'm surprised actually that this has not happened before.
