If you have changed the physical configuration of the floppy drive, it probably means that the ribbon cable is the wrong way 'round.

Otherwise the Bios may have 'forgotten' the configuration, due the CMOS battery failing, or the floppy may have just died.

Does the drive light come one and stay on when you boot the computer up? If so, then you need to flip the cable over and reconnect it (change the side the coloured stripe is on).

If it's not that, and you've checked the floppy cable is connected to the motherboard as well, then it IS possible that the drive is kaput. Can you swap it with another to check?

Finally, and I know it's a silly suggestion (but I did it myself once, to my shame) - it IS possible to accidentally connect an IDE cable to some motherboards floppy controllers and floppy drives, could this be the problem (compare it to your HD cable, the floppy drive one should be thinner across).

IDE cable as a floppy cable, ha ha, what about the other 6 free connectors at the end, brilliant stuff ! If in doubt get the Ball Pein Hammer out

1. make sure, as was said, color stripe is on #1 pin.
2. is your cable for more than 1 device, such as tape
drive. and if so your floppy(a)drive has to be at the end of the cable. and even if you only have one drive and you use a dual connection cable use the end connector.
3. get a new cable. if you plug and unplug a drive cable too
many times you will loose contact on one of the pins and
your drive won't work.

Well Rfeenie, the reason it was possible was cos the motherboard had a ton of free space on the side of the connector, and there was no guide socket either. On the floppy drive, the same thing also happened...on top of that, it WAS the first time I'd rebuilt my computer, and I was resuing some older parts.
