My floppy drive recently stopped reading and writing to disks out of the blue. I thought it was shot so I replaced it and the new one does the same thing. I can't format disks or anything. But it does work fine in DOS. Device manager says it is working properly though. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Remove it from Device Manager and reboot. It will pick it up.
See if it works then.

I tried that and it still doesn't work. Maybe I replaced one bad floppy with another.

There are hundreds of queries about this problem in Win2k and XP. I know, as I think I have read them all. I have yet to see a comprehensive answer to the problem.

There is likely nothing wrong with your floppy.

In your BIOS there is an setting for the floppy drive which sets its address and something like UART. Take a look at it and try changing the address. Might just help.

This floppy fix has worked for some. Please make a backup of the key from regedit before modifying the value. You will need to reboot to see if the patch worked for you.

Use regedit to open the registry and look for HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\ControlClass{4D36E980-E32511CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
Delete the UpperFilters (and LowerFilters if any) keys

Restart the PC, with fingers crossed for luck. This can fix floppy problems under Win2k and XP.

Thanks for all your suggestions. I replaced the drive and it is working fine. I guess I just had a bad one.
